NFHL History
The National Fantasy Hockey League
(NFHL) was established in 1994 by present Commissioner
Rob Nekich. The initial league had 11 participants
that selected a 17 Player roster. A NFHL Point
system was created and utilized points accumulated
by actual NHL Players during the NHL regular season.
Except for the inaugural season the NFHL Roster
was based on actual NHL Player salaries with each
team have a salary limit "cap" to create
the team roster. The team that accumulated the
most points at the end of the season was deemed
the NFHL Champion. The NFHL expanded over the
next decade as well adopted several rule and game
changes. The following are the key elements that
have changed over the league history.
1994/95 - NFHL established with
11 teams and a 17 Player Roster.
1995/96 - NFHL expands to 16 teams
and 22 Player Roster utilizing actual NHL Player
Salaries. Point system counted the top 9 forwards,
6 defenseman and 2 goaltenders on roster.
1996/97 - NFHL expands to 33 teams
and 23 Player Roster. Point system counted 10
forwards, 6 defenseman and 2 goaltenders.
1998/99 - NFHL introduces four division
format which included names of Smythe, Norris,
Patrick and Adams.
2001/ 02 - NFHL introduces participants
to be identified by team name. The league also
introduces the NFHL Draft Lottery.
2002 - 05 - NFHL continues expansion
reaching a record 55 franchises. A "Franchise
Player" rule was adopted during the 2003/04
season but droped after one season.
2005/06 - NFHL introduces "Trade
Rule" allowing one trade per season.
2006/07 - NFHL expands "Trade
Rule" allowing two trades per season. Introduces
"Payroll Room" in the Team Payroll System
2007/08 - NFHL expands to record
65 franchises. League introduces the "Compensation
Lottery"
2008/09 - NFHL to introduces Farm
System and expand "Transactions" to
include Injury Reserve.
