The National Fantasy Hockey League (NFHL) was established in 1994 by present Commissioner Rob Nekich. The initial league had 11 participants that selected a 17 Player roster. A NFHL Point system was created and utilized points accumulated by actual NHL Players during the NHL regular season. Except for the inaugural season the NFHL Roster was based on actual NHL Player salaries with each team have a salary limit "cap" to create the team roster. The team that accumulated the most points at the end of the season was deemed the NFHL Champion. The NFHL expanded over the next decade as well adopted several rule and game changes.
